The Department of Biochemistry is the oldest pillar of knowledge in Benjamin S. Carson (Snr.) School of Medicine and it is a well-known centre for scholarship and excellence in research, teaching and community service using modern techniques to proffer solution to human health challenges.
The department is well-equipped with educational gadgets for the training of BSc, , MBBS, PGD, MSc, MPhil, PhD and allied health science students. Many of our faculty are renowned erudite academics who have excelled and distinguished themselves in areas of lipids and membrane, phytomedicine research, human nutritional biochemistry clinical biochemistry and industrial biochemistry. A number of our research outputs which are aimed at elucidating the molecular basis of life and diseases have been adjudged as impactful to the global scientific community.
Our strong research base is due to the research-focused laboratories that are equipped with modern state-of-art facility in biochemistry. The research conducted is geared towards solving problems associated with many diseases which plague humanity, particularly in Africa. Efforts are also geared towards consolidating the outcomes from scientific findings in phytomedicine research, nutritional biochemistry and industrial biochemistry through collaborations and linkages with other institutions and industries within and outside the country. The scientific discoveries made and yet to be explored by the department will not be a success without intrinsic and extrinsic dependence of the faculty and staff on God’s direction and wisdom
